🔥 Fire Safety for Kids: Simple Ways to Practice at Home

Hey parents! October is Fire Safety Awareness Month — the perfect time to help your little ones learn how to stay safe. Fire safety has always been one of my favorite things to teach because it’s packed with playful, physical activities that kids love while learning an important life skill.

Here are a few fun and simple ways to practice at home!

1️⃣ Stop, Drop, and Roll 🛑

This timeless phrase is a classic for a reason!

  • Pretend you’re doing normal activities around the house.

  • Set a timer, and when it beeps, everyone stops, drops, and rolls.

  • Make it a game — kids will be laughing and learning what to do if their clothes ever catch fire.

2️⃣ Fall and Crawl 🐾

This catchy safety tip is all about staying low to avoid smoke.

  • Play Little Richard’s Fall and Crawl song (yes, it’s as fun as it sounds!)

  • Crawl around the house with your child, showing them that smoke rises and the safest way out is close to the ground.

3️⃣ Don’t Hide, Go Outside 🚪

Some children instinctively hide when they’re scared, which can make it harder for firefighters to find them.

  • Practice this phrase together: “Don’t hide, go outside!”

  • Talk about where to go if there’s smoke or fire.

  • If they can’t get outside, teach them to make themselves seen at a window so firefighters can help.

4️⃣ Make an Escape Plan 🗺️

Planning ahead saves lives!

  • Draw a simple escape route for your home.

  • Pick a family meeting spot outside (like a tree or mailbox).

  • Practice it together so everyone knows what to do if there’s ever a real fire.

🏁 Wrap-Up

Talking about fire safety doesn’t have to be scary — it can be fun and empowering for kids. Practice these phrases often, and watch the Be Cool About Fire Safety video on YouTube for even more playful learning.
